East Bay Resilience Hub
Campaign Description: This campaign will build the people’s power and engagement to advance and secure a transformation of the East Bay Energy System through the development of resilience hubs in the East Bay for the most impacted residents through developing microgrids.
AVA Community Energy Description: East Bay Clean Energy is a community choice aggregation that enables democratic participation ( although it is still a work in progress for more democratic participation). This agency is the decision-making body and is financially responsible for taking action to finance a resilience hub.
Goal: Secure majority board support and action to advance the financing of $14.5 million for multi-year funding with the start of the design of a decarbonization and resilience hub in pollution-burdened areas with trusted community spaces such as Castlemont High School or Lions Creek Crossings in 2024.
Clean Power to the People Workshop Series and Gatherings
Program Description: The Clean Power to the People Workshop Series educates and informs community organizations and leaders on relevant energy justice and democracy topics. It is an opportunity to encourage and foster relationship-building between frontline community organizations that have yet to be activated in energy democracy. This program also connects local work with statewide and national work. Workshops can be in person or virtual.
Program Incentives: The incentive for community organizations to participate is to provide community members with access to resources on bill savings and other financial relief programs. This is an opportunity to put democracy in action, vocalize actions and advocate for policies that reduce pollution build energy and climate resilience.
Gatherings and Convenings: We know gatherings and convenings in a post-covid environment must prioritize safety for our most vulnerable community members. We value the power of collective gathering and networking and strategizing, bringing advocates together. The Clean Power and Healthy Communities conference brought hundreds of local leaders together to advocate for energy democracy.
Defending Energy Democracy
The political fight for Energy Democracy is intense and fierce. Private energy corporations spend millions to maintain political power in frontline communities. Despite these challenges, LCEA is able to mobilize community power to intervene against policies that harm frontline communities. This is a key tactic that is made possible from LCEA’s commitment to building and fostering alliances and coalitions.
